Atlas of the Invisible:
Imminent Flooding

An ephemeral installation that visualises the impacts of global warming through four coastal cities — Mérida, New York, Cape Town, and Amsterdam — each representing a distinct geography of climate vulnerability.

The installation consists of a horizontal fabric plane representing sea level, traversed vertically by four recycled fabric cones corresponding to each city. A pulley and counterweight system loaded with sand slowly descends the cones through the sea level mark over the duration of the exhibition — a measured, physical enactment of submergence.

The work transmits a call to action toward the present, inviting visitors to consider the relationship between daily habits and the planet's future. Data on sea level elevation under different climate change scenarios grounds each cone's trajectory.

Sea level rise projections · 12 cities

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) defines four climate scenarios — called SSPs (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) — that describe possible futures depending on how much greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Each scenario projects a different degree of warming and, consequently, a different rise in sea level. The data below shows projected sea level change in metres for 12 coastal cities across six continents, at three time horizons. Source: IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), Working Group I (2021).

SSP1 · 2.6
Sustainability. Strong mitigation measures. Rapid decarbonisation.
≈ +2°C by 2100
SSP2 · 4.5
Middle of the road. Moderate measures. Gradual transition.
≈ +2.3°C – 3.5°C
SSP3 · 7.0
Regional rivalry. Low ambition. Fragmented policies.
≈ +3.7°C – 5.1°C
SSP4 · 8.5
Fossil-fuelled development. No mitigation. Catastrophic warming.
≈ +4.3°C – 6.7°C
